Our goal must be a freer world that is more secure and prosperous. We must promote free trade, democracy, good governance and the rule of law.
Meeting the Challenges of the 21st Century
The UK has always played an active role overseas. We have benefited from our close ties with other countries and we, in turn, have contributed to the spread of democracy and the downfall of communism. Unfortunately, the long crisis of confidence following Suez and the lack of foresight of successive governments have combined to hamper our military effectiveness and political leadership. Endless regulations and taxes have also stifled our economic drive. We must strive to become world class once more, trading freely, meeting the challenge of the new emerging markets and promoting better security through the spread of democracy and good governance.
